Ultimate New York City PurseThis is a featured page

Getting by in the city that never sleeps has you hopping from subway to cab to wherever all the while mingling with the black-coated peeps of the Big Apple. It takes some planning. So whether you live on Manhattan or are coming to visit, this page is going to tell you how to make it here. Because as old Blue Eyes crooned, you make it here, you make it everywhere.

Ultimate New York City Purse - It's All in the Bag

This is the Tory Burch weekender bag. Great style. A little big but that's how we roll in NYC.

The HOBO International Harper purse. Soft, slouchy but gorgeously crafted.

Michael Kors
Large Satchel
. A little bit country, a little bit rock'n'roll.

What every purse needs:

  • Ultimate New York City Purse - It's All in the BagA compact wallet. In this you carry your driver's license, credit card, health care card, two credit cards. No checkbooks. No gift cards (separate billfold for these). Sometimes, this wallet can double as a clutch but I would advise traveling light in terms of charging power with the credit and store cards in case you lose your purse. At right, here is a stylish wallet from Isabella Fiore, found at JCMadison.

  • Tissues. You're freezing and then all of a sudden you are steaming up on a subway ride packed with people and your nose starts to run.

  • Singles and a few hidden twenties. Singles are for tipping. New York is huge on "duking" or slipping money to those that help you without being super obvious about it. Duke the doorman, the delivery man, the super, the porter, the bagger at your grocery store, the guy who parks your car. How you duke: fold money into a tri-fold and hold under the thumb. Say "Thank you" and hold out your hand low as if to shake hands. Make eye contact. Most everyone mentioned above gets ten percent, but round up. Let's say the fare is $6.50. Give 'em $8.00. Restaurants: good service gets 20 percent. Grocery delivery is ten percent of the bill. Carry twenties because some places in this modern city run on cash.

  • Sunglasses. Good for sunny days and also for windy days because they keep hair out of your eyes.

  • Small map with subway stations. Also, for tips on subway and walking routes, try HopStop.

  • Chapstick and lipstick. Look good!

  • Small deodorant. You're going to be going for a long while (lots of day to night events) and you'll feel better with a reapplication of this stuff. Remember, you will be walking everywhere.
